Field noteNote

On Living

A note on “the chance to live”; on why, sometimes out of love, we take away from the people we love the chance to make mistakes, to experience — even the chance to be wounded.

These days I think about this a lot...

In life, how often do we give ourselves — and others, especially others — the chance to live?

When I say “the chance to live,” I mean it in its truest sense.

Living is not only experiencing the good things.

It is making mistakes... getting wounded... being hurt, too!

So “giving the chance to live” sometimes turns into giving the chance to make mistakes, to get wounded — even to be hurt.

How much of this chance do we give the people around us?

What about our loved ones?

What about our children — their present, or their future?

You might say: it isn't ours to control other people! At best we can advise them not to make mistakes or get hurt.

Then I ask another question:

“What if you could force that person?”

As improbable as it sounds, we often fail to notice that through our decisions — our actions, even our reactions — we can seriously shape the people around us.

And sometimes, out of love, we take away our loved ones' chance to make mistakes.

Their chance to experience.

Even their chance to be wounded...

Maybe sometimes saving a person from a broken arm or leg only leaves them facing a far greater danger in the future...

Maybe not.

Because sometimes a person's first mistake can be their last.

And that is exactly what makes it hard.

These days I wrestle with myself more,

I ask more questions...

and the more I don't know..!
